I am a seriously amateur photog armed with a DSLR and.. a knack. Not sure if it is a good knack or a bad knack, but I love to take pictures. My brother has been using Smugmug for quite some time, and I finally got on board a couple of years ago. I was getting really tired of Snapfish and the like – since you could only see crummy small images, deal with ads, and have to login. Smug is my personal art gallery – I show what I want, and people can see the photo just as I intended. You can get prints, gifts, and even get your ORIGINAL file backups anytime you want. They are a small company, and care about their customers.

If you take a lot of photos, it is time to move away from Flickr and the like. Check it out. Here are some of my fav’s.

If you want to quickly add some “social” aspects to your website, Twitter and Facebook are obviously the easy ones to start with. While there are many different ways to integrate these services with your site – if you want some quick, clean solutions, think about Widgets. Both services let you add a small box to your site (“widget”) which can contain a variety of content.

To get started with a Twitter Widget.. head over to http://twitter.com/widgets/ . Assuming you have a twitter account – you can customize the styling for these flashy little items and grab some code to add to your site.

For Facebook, “Fanboxes” are a nice feature. You first need a “page” for your website or business -assuming that’s in place, head over to http://www.facebook.com/facebook-widgets/fanbox.php … you can make a few edits and grab the code. There are several other options from Facebook, which you can review here.

More tightly integrated solutions are out there as well – such as allowing users to comment on your site content simply by logging into their Twitter/Facebook accounts, or even pulling your content into your Twitter feed or Facebook page.

The majority of sites I build are based on WordPress – not only because it is free, amazingly extensible (is that a real term?) and just plain cool.. but I also really like it because ANYONE can use it. While there are tons of great themes out there to be had for free, it is often hard to find a really nice one to run a business site on. I have an answer for that issue though – ThemeForest (also on twitter).

ThemeForest has a fantastic selection of “premium” themes – most of which can be had for under $30. There are many other “premium theme” sites out there, but it is hard to trust many of those sites. ThemeForest is a solid choice – and clearly run by some smart people (Envato).

A sister site of ThemeForest is GraphicRiver – piles of fantastic artwork for dirt cheap. Good stuff!

Welcome to Pete’s Web Work. This little site will be showcasing technologies, services, and whatever else I find interesting – stuff that you likely should keep in mind. I don’t have a set menu of services – I am into the open ended style of consultancy and offer budget-minded solutions for what you need.

Need a website? Easy. Got a website, but need it rebuilt? Sure. Have a site, like it, but need some help maintaining or promoting? No problem. Think your current web host is awful, and need help moving to a better one? Surely. Questions on this new fangled “social media” trend? Cake.

If it’s web related, I can help.
